Motorway Recovery in West Yorkshire | Fast, Safe Help When You've Broken Down
Breaking down on the motorway is one of the most stressful things that can happen behind the wheel. Traffic is thundering past at 70mph, you can’t just step out and have a look, and you’re probably wondering how long help will take.
Active Recoveries provides motorway recovery across West Yorkshire, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We’re based in Bradford and work around the M62, M1, M606, M621 and A1(M), so whether you’re stuck near Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield or Halifax, one phone call gets the process moving.

Broken Down on a Motorway? Do This First
We’d rather you were safe than quick, so before you pick up the phone, run through these steps. They follow National Highways and Highway Code advice.
- Leave at the next exit or service area if you can. If the car is still driving, getting off the motorway is always the best option.
- If you can’t, move left. Pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area (the orange-painted bays on smart motorways).
- Switch on your hazard lights and, if you’re on a hard shoulder, turn your wheels to the left so the car won’t roll into traffic if it’s hit.
- Get everyone out through the left-hand doors and stand well away from the carriageway, behind the barrier if there is one. Keep pets in the vehicle unless there’s a risk of fire.
- Then call your recovery provider. That’s your breakdown cover company, or us if you don’t have cover or want a local team.
If you’re on a smart motorway, never pull out of an emergency area without speaking to National Highways first. They can set signs and close a lane so you rejoin safely.
Our Motorway Recovery Service
We’re a local recovery team, not a call centre. When you ring, you’ll talk to someone who knows the roads you’re on and can tell you what happens next.
Motorway breakdown recovery
We recover cars, vans and motorcycles from motorway breakdowns and take them to a garage, your home or wherever you need them to go.
Flat tyre and puncture help
A puncture on the motorway isn't something to tackle yourself. Our team can attend and sort the tyre or recover the vehicle, depending on what's safest and what you have with you.
Jump starts
If a flat battery has left you stuck, we can get you started again where it's safe to do so.
Fuel delivery
Run out of fuel? We'll bring enough to get you to the nearest station.
Accident recovery
If your vehicle is damaged and can't be driven, we can arrange transport once the police and National Highways have finished at the scene.
Winch-out
If your vehicle has slipped off the road into mud, snow or a verge, our winch service can pull it clear.
You can also book online through our Request Recovery form, but when you’re on a motorway, a phone call is quicker.
Motorways and Areas We Cover in West Yorkshire
West Yorkshire has some of the busiest stretches of motorway in the North, and the weather over the Pennines doesn’t make life any easier. We attend breakdowns on:
- M62, from Rishworth Moor and Ainley Top (junction 24) through Brighouse and Chain Bar, across to Pontefract and Ferrybridge
- M1, around Leeds and Wakefield, including the busy junctions near Lofthouse and Woolley Edge
- M606, the Bradford spur
- M621, into Leeds city centre
- A1(M), on the eastern edge of the county
Our recovery covers Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Dewsbury, Batley, Brighouse, Pontefract and Castleford, plus the surrounding towns and villages. If you’re not sure exactly where you are, don’t worry. The marker posts at the edge of the hard shoulder and your phone’s map will help us find you.

Puncture or Flat Tyre on the Motorway
A puncture on a motorway needs a calm head, because the temptation to change the wheel yourself is strong, but it’s one of the most dangerous things you can do on a hard shoulder.
- Slow down gradually. Grip the wheel firmly, don’t brake hard, and steer towards the left.
- Don’t try to change the tyre yourself. The Highway Code advises against even simple repairs on the hard shoulder. Traffic passes within touching distance.
- Get yourself and your passengers behind the barrier and call for help.
- Tell us what you’ve got. A spare wheel, a repair kit or a tyre sealant can sometimes change what we do. Many newer cars have no spare at all, so it helps to know before we arrive.
In many cases the safest option is for us to move the vehicle to a safe place off the motorway, where the tyre can be dealt with properly.
Hard Shoulder or Smart Motorway: What Changes?
Some sections of the M62 and M1 in West Yorkshire have a permanent hard shoulder. Others run as smart motorways, where the hard shoulder is used as a live lane some or all of the time. On those, you’ll see blue signs with an orange SOS symbol pointing to the next emergency area.
The key differences:
Hard shoulder: stop as far left as you can, ideally just past an emergency phone.
Smart motorway: head for an emergency area. Use the SOS phone and wait for instructions before moving again.
Live lane or roadworks: this is an emergency. Keep your hazards on, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened if you can't safely get out, and call 999.
If you have a hearing, speech or mobility impairment, National Highways has a text service for roadside help (0738 028 3600), and they recommend registering for the 999 text service before you travel.
What to Tell Us When You Call
A few details help us get to you quicker:
- Which motorway you’re on, the direction you were travelling, and the last junction you passed
- The number on the nearest marker post or emergency phone, if you can see one
- Your vehicle type, make and model (including whether it’s a van, motorbike or automatic)
- What happened: warning lights, strange noises, smoke, a puncture or flat battery
- Whether you’ve already called National Highways or the emergency services
- Where you’d like the vehicle taken
No need to have all of it. Give us what you can and we’ll fill in the gaps.
